ISO 14001: 2015 - Officially published and applied

ISO 14001 is one of the most popular environmental management standards in the world. A review is performed to ensure compliance with future requirements. After that, ISO 14001: 2015 version has reached an international consensus in establishment of requirements for an environmental management system. It helps to improve their organization in association with ensuring environmental performance through efficient use of resources and waste reduction, gaining competitive advantage, the trust and confidence of interested parties.

For the past 20 years, with the introduction of environmental management requirements, ISO 14001 has been one of the most widely used standards in the world. Moreover, it is an important business tool for many organizations. More than 300,000 certificates are made each year, ISO 14001 ranks in the high position on the agenda of many organizations which focus on about environmental impact.

In order to ensure the conformity of the standard to the development of the market, a revision of ISO 14001 version 2015 (ISO 14001: 2015 replaces ISO 14001 version: 2004) was officially published and applied on September 15, 2015. The new version responds to the latest trends, such as recognition of companies about the need to pay attention to external and internal factors that influence their impacts, including climate change.
The review is the result of 121 experts from the technical committee ISO / TC 207 / SC 1 on development of the representative environment for interested parties from 88 countries, led by BSI, representatives of UK in ISO.
ISO 14001: 2015 contains improvements in the following key points:
- Commitment of leadership;
- Alignment with strategic directions;
- Protect the environment, focus on proactive initiatives;
- Communicate effectively through media strategies;
- Thinking on the basis of life cycle of a product or service; consider each stage and process from the start point to the end.
Up to now, ISO 14001 has existed for 20 years. Ms. Anne-Marie Warris - Chair of Technical Committee ISO / TC 207 / SC1 (responsible for developing and reviewing ISO 14001) believes that this new review has cability of ensuring its comformity in accordance with market in the next 20 years. "ISO 14001 do many of its dreams which occured 20 years ago, including manage environmental issues comprehensively," she said.
ISO 14001: 2015 can be applied by any organization. It sets out the criteria for an environmental management system and can be certified; Plan action frameworks for a company or organization to follow to establish an effective environmental management system. ISO 14001: 2015 does not show specific environmental performance criteria, so organizations and enterprises can use all or a part of the corresponding Standard suitably to improve their environmental management system.
It is not possible to declare compliance with ISO 14001: 2015 if all of its requirements are integrated into the organization's environmental management system which are applied ISO 14001: 2004 without the noncomformity deletion.
"In the next time, the new version will create a close relationship between environmental issues and thinking, plan on the organization's action strategy." Ms. Anne-Marie Warris - Chair of Technical Committee ISO / TC 207 / SC1- commented: “I can foresee that the opinion about life cycle and supply chain issues addressed in ISO 14001 will become hot and hot in the future”.
ISO Secretary-General Kevin McKinley said, "This review of ISO 14001 reflects many changes in technology and what interested parties expect." According to him, "ISO 14001 can be a potential tool that bring economic benefits, enhance the competitive advantage and improve productivity and quality."

According to the guidelines of the International Accreditation Forum (IAF), organizations certified ISO 14001: 2004 have three years to convert to ISO 14001: 2015. This means that Certificates of ISO 14001: 2015 can only be issued from September 15, 2015 and all Certificates according to ISO 14001: 2004 will expire after September 14 / 2018.
